MAGNETISM

Alumna:  Mª Dolores Rosa Mata
.

GUIDELINE:
-          Presentation of the material and previous knowledge: we show a magnet and a compass to children and we ask them about the relation that they suppose to have between those elements.  We also ask about the topic that we are going to work in.

-           First explanation: we talk about the concept of magnetism, the properties of the magnet and the similarities that it has with de needle of the compass.
-          Second brainstorm: we make the following question: what do you think is the biggest magnet in the world? Where do you think are the north and south poles on it?
-          Second explanation: we talk about the Earth and the magnetic poles.
-          Practice task: we imagine we are lost in the wild and we want to find the north to go home. What can you do if we have the following elements: water, one bucket, one needle, one magnet, one piece of material that floats? Then, we follow the method to create a compass:
1.      We put the water in the bucket.
2.      We make the material that floats (piece of plastic, leaf,…)  on the water.
3.      We rub the needle with the magnet.
4.      We put the needle on the leaf.
5.      We check that our rudimentary compass works as a normal compass.
EVALUATION: we are going to use the practical task to evaluate if the children have understood the explanation and if they have paid attention almost all the time. We also can evaluate the participation in the moment of the brainstorm. At the end, we must ask about the things that they are understood in this lesson.
EVALUATION OF THE EXPERIMENT: the task will be also useful to understand the explanation in a visual way. For this reason, it can be an explanation and an evaluation at the same time. We can ask the children if they have enjoyed the experiment and if the experiment has helped them to make them understand the lesson in a better way.

EVALUATION OF THE TEACHER: we can make our own evaluation by thinking about the feelings that we have had during the session and the feedback that we receive from our children.
